Magnesium is at a full dose here, 300 milligrams against the 250 milligrams used in studies. In a placebo-controlled trial of 86 adults with an underactive thyroid, 10 weeks of magnesium with zinc and vitamin A raised free thyroxine and lowered a marker of inflammation, with no change in thyroid-stimulating hormone [1]. A pooled review of 35 trials found a similar rise in free thyroxine with that combination, but magnesium was never tested on its own [2]. One small 4-week study found magnesium alone raised active thyroid hormone in athletes and inactive people [3]. Magnesium taken with a thyroid hormone tablet cut its absorption, so take them hours apart [4]. Magnesium before thyroid surgery did not clearly change calcium levels [5], and diet magnesium was not linked to thyroid cancer risk [6]. Ashwagandha is well below the studied dose here, 125 milligrams against 600 milligrams. At 600 milligrams it improved thyroid hormone levels in one trial of 50 adults with a mildly underactive thyroid [7], a result reviews rest on [8]. But in healthy adults it caused no change [9], and a pooled analysis of 23 trials found only a modest rise in thyroxine [10]. Longer trials found no harmful thyroid changes [11][12]. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

Biohacker Summary

Members Only0 of 10 recommend it
0 of 10 biohackers on our panel recommend it

Magnesium is the main ingredient, and all ten panelists spoke about it: most either use it or recommend it, while a few stay neutral. The most common reason is sleep, with three of them taking 400 mg of magnesium threonate before bed, one taking glycinate at night, and another suggesting threonate and similar forms for deep sleep. Others point to blood pressure, muscle function, energy, brain function, bone support, and electrolytes, with some using electrolyte drinks that contain magnesium and one taking 300 mg before bed. Cautions came from one panelist who says labels can overstate how much real magnesium is in a product, especially citrate, and who says the evidence that magnesium reliably improves sleep is not yet consistent. Another panelist said magnesium does not fix waking in the night, and several noted that standard blood tests can miss low levels. Ashwagandha is a smaller ingredient in this product, and the few who mentioned it linked it to stress, sleep, and lower cortisol, with one finding it only a little helpful and not right for everyone.

RAL Summary

Members OnlyTier 4 for Thyroid Health

The thyroid evidence for magnesium mostly comes from combinations with zinc and vitamin A, with only one small study of magnesium alone, and ashwagandha is underdosed, so the evidence is thin. No reviews were counted, so it cannot rank higher than emerging.

  • Emerging: not enough evidence to rank higher yet.

Where the evidence disagrees: 14 of the 22 human studies found no effect.
