Solaray Cascara Sagrada 450 mg Review

Solaray Cascara Sagrada Bark 450mg is an herbal supplement offered as 100 or 180 VegCaps. The product page lists the ingredients as Cascara Sagrada, vegetable cellulose capsule and magnesium stearate. The suggested use is to take one VegCap twice daily with a meal or a glass of water, and the page says to use only as directed. The label images describe the bottle as Non-GMO and Lab Verified, with a green label and herb illustration, and the nutrition facts and directions are printed per VegCap. The page presents the product as part of the Solaray range, a brand that describes itself on the page as having been established in 1973 and believing that what people put in their bodies should be proven rather than promised. Solaray states that it sources its own raw materials, triple-tests every lot, and manufactures most of its products in-house. The page says the company runs a production facility in Ogden, Utah, that is a GMP facility certified by NSF, and that its ISO-accredited laboratory performs about 15,000 tests per month to verify ingredient potency and purity. The testing section lists passed screens for heavy metals including arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, for microbials including mold, yeast, coliform and E. coli, and for contaminants including gluten and ethylene oxide, along with physical property checks. Most contaminants, heavy metals and microbes are said to be tested to ensure no more than 3 ppm. The page also carries a disclaimer that customer reviews reflect individual experiences, that results may vary, and that the statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. The product is shown as sold out at the time of capture, and a subscribe and save option of 20 percent is offered for recurring delivery. The page does not give a barcode in its data for the bottle, and no cost per month is stated.

Study, Trial or Testing Result Summary

There is no good human study of cascara sagrada on its own for constipation. The only trial showing relief tested a combination product: in 34 people with long-term constipation, ear mushroom fiber with added ingredients including cascara improved bowel movement frequency, straining, stool consistency and the feeling of relief compared with placebo. Because cascara was only one part of that mix, the trial cannot show what cascara does alone, and the product may cause stomach discomfort or pain [1]. In 271 people cleaning out the bowel before a colon exam, a cascara laxative taken with a bowel prep drink worked about as well as other preparations, and 12% had an inadequate cleanout. That trial was about bowel cleansing, not everyday constipation relief [2]. Three reviews of constipation treatments included cascara but gave no results for cascara on its own [3][4][5]. No study gave a tested daily dose, so it is not known how this product's 900 mg a day compares with any studied amount. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

Overall, buyers are very happy with Solaray Cascara Sagrada 450 mg capsules, which carry about 66 ratings across the stores. Almost all are five stars, with a few four-star ratings and none below four on the pages that show a breakdown. **What buyers say it did for them:** The main theme is relief from constipation and sluggish bowels. One reviewer calls it "the best and most gentle" option for constipation. Another says it is "the best herb or supplement Ive ever found" for helping them go. One reports "almost immediate effectiveness," and one finds it "better than psyllium for slow bowel motility." One buyer also says it helps dissolve gallstones. That is the reviewer's own belief, and it appears only once. A store summary also mentions a long-time user who has taken it for many years, and others who call it a good natural laxative and good for detoxing. **What they complain about:** No written review criticises the capsules. The one critical review, on the Solaray page, is about a separate order that the customer says was returned and never credited to their card. It is a billing and returns complaint, not a product one. None of the reviews mention side effects. **Taste, smell, pill size or form:** Reviewers don't discuss taste, smell or capsule size. The store summaries say the same. One page lists the form as a vegcap, but buyers don't comment on it. Reviews of other forms of the product were left out, and this summary covers the capsules only. **Gentleness:** This is a recurring point. One reviewer says it moved things along "without any complications," with "no cramping or discomfort." Another uses the word "gentle." Because only a few reviewers say this, it reflects individual experiences. **Value for money:** Nobody comments on price or value, so there is nothing to report either way. **Who it seems to suit and who it did not:** It seems to suit adults with occasional constipation or slow bowel motility who want a plant-based option. Some had tried fiber such as psyllium and preferred this. A long-time user says it works well for people with bowel movement problems. No reviewer says it did not work for them, so we can't say who it is unsuited to. One store page lists the label directions of one vegcap twice daily with a meal or water. It also lists a warning against use beyond seven consecutive days and for children under 12. The reviews do not discuss these directions. **How much weight to give this:** The written reviews are short and mostly general, such as "Love it," "Excellent" and "a savior." Taken together, they are a small and enthusiastic group of buyers. They give a consistent picture of fast, gentle relief but little detail on price, taste or size.

Biohacker Summary

Members Only2 of 10 recommend it
2 of 10 biohackers on our panel recommend it

Only two of the ten panelists spoke about cascara sagrada, the main ingredient, and both recommend it. One of them lists it among the best natural laxatives for constipation and calls it a very popular herbal laxative that works like senna by stimulating the muscles of the gut, and he has suggested it more than once as a good herbal choice. The other recommends cascara as a tea, using it as an alternative to coffee. Neither gave a dose, neither named anything to pair it with, and no one voiced a caution or said they stopped taking it.

RAL Summary

Members OnlyTier 4 for Regularity: Fast Relief

The tier 2 grade rests on a trial of ear mushroom fiber with several added ingredients including cascara sagrada, not cascara on its own, and no other study tested cascara alone for constipation relief. So it is graded Tier 4, lower than the rules alone gave.

  • Emerging: not enough evidence to rank higher yet.

Where the evidence disagrees: 1 of the 7 human studies found no effect.

Body systems: Digestive system

Combine with: For its actual purpose of short-term constipation relief, pair it with magnesium citrate or psyllium husk fiber for gentler bulk and hydration, plus plenty of water. Probiotics such as Bifidobacterium lactis can support long-term regularity so stimulant use stays minimal. Ginger or peppermint may ease cramping. Consider potassium and electrolyte intake if used for more than a few days, and limit use to 7-10 days. For the reverse aging goal, choose different products such as NMN or NR, resveratrol, CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, and omega-3s instead. Consult a healthcare provider if you take medications such as meds, heart drugs, or meds.

Possible side effects: The combination trial noted possible stomach discomfort or pain. The store listing warns against use beyond seven days in a row and for children under 12.
