Thorne Green Tea Phytosome Review

Green Tea Phytosome is presented as an optimally absorbed form of green tea that supports fat burning and provides liver protection. The product description explains that Green Tea Phytosome, made of green tea polyphenols bound to phospholipids, functions as a liver protective antioxidant and provides fat burning benefits without caffeine. Green tea is described as popular for its antioxidant properties and its thermogenic, or fat burning, effect. Thorne's Green Tea Phytosome is said to contain polyphenols and to help maintain the body's level of glutathione, another important antioxidant. The page states that green tea extracts can increase natural energy expenditure and fat oxidation, thus essentially burning calories. The polyphenols are also said to offer liver-protective benefits and help maintain the body's normal inflammatory response to oxidative stressors. According to the page, the product is optimally absorbed; one study showed the peak blood concentration of the polyphenol EGCG from the Green Tea Phytosome complex, measured over six hours, was almost twice that of a non-complexed green tea extract. The page describes Greenselect Phytosome, the ingredient used, as tested in obese subjects of both genders on a low-caloric diet. In that study of 100 subjects, 50 received the green tea extract plus the low-calorie diet and 50 followed only the diet. After 90 days, significantly greater improvements in weight and body mass index were reported in the Greenselect Phytosome group compared to the diet-only group. The page also cites human studies of green tea's weight management properties that revealed greater calorie burning by individuals who took the extract compared to those who did not. It notes that although some effects of green tea extract are attributed to caffeine, one study found increased metabolic rate and greater fat metabolism in subjects taking a green tea extract without caffeine compared to placebo. The Why Thorne section says Greenselect Phytosome is formulated with the scientific rigor Thorne is known for, with each ingredient carefully selected, clinically studied, and tested through multiple rounds of quality control for purity, potency, and consistency. Thorne states it is trusted by health-care practitioners. The Tested for quality section says the product has been third-party tested and certified to verify that what is in the package matches the label and confirms it contains no unsafe levels of contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms. The product comes as 60 capsules, with a serving size of one capsule containing 250mg of Green Tea Phytosome, priced at $34. Warnings state that the product is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to any ingredients, that pregnant people should consult a health-care practitioner before use, that there are no known adverse interactions at publication date, and that New York law prohibits sale to individuals under eighteen.

Green tea is the only active ingredient here, at 750 mg a day, which is above the 400 mg dose that worked in studies. Across 53 human studies, 32 found an improvement and 15 found no effect. A pooled analysis of 111 trials with 6171 adults with overweight or obesity found about 1.25 kg more weight loss than comparison groups, though the certainty was low [1]. A pooled analysis of 59 trials with 3802 people found lower body weight, body mass index and body fat percentage, but no change in fat mass [2]. Another pooled analysis found about 1.78 kg more weight loss, with the largest effect at doses under 500 mg a day over 12 weeks [3]. In 240 Japanese men and women with belly fat, 583 mg of catechins daily for 12 weeks reduced weight, body fat and waist size more than a low dose [4]. In 182 overweight Chinese adults, 886 mg of catechins daily for 90 days cut waist size by 1.9 cm and weight by 1.2 kg [5]. Green tea did not help people keep weight off after dieting [6]. Overall, the effect is small but fairly consistent. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

Thorne Green Tea Phytosome capsules are mostly well liked, with about 535 ratings across the stores and most buyers satisfied. The written feedback is thin and mixed on how much it does, and a few buyers felt no difference at all. Reviews of other forms of the product were left out; this covers the capsules only. **What buyers say it did for them:** The most common praise is a gentle lift without caffeine side effects. One says it "Gives me a boost each day but without headaches and jitters." Another reports "No stomach upset, I did have more energy." One buyer felt less groggy and slept better, noting that one capsule did nothing at first but two worked for them. Others use it for weight management: "a must have if you're working on that waist line." A store summary adds that one reviewer found the fat-oxidation effect modest rather than magic, but helpful for someone on a calorie deficit or strict diet. Several people use it alongside other supplements, and one says it "supercharges my stack" even though it doesn't feel like much alone. **What they complain about:** The main complaint is that people noticed nothing. Buyers wrote "really could not tell a difference so discontinued use" and "not sure if the supplement is doing anything." One reported "No weight loss or bloat relief, I started having migraines." Another got agitated after one capsule a day and was puzzled, since "it said caffeine free." One buyer never received the item. Store summaries say a couple of reviewers who had used it for a month or more still felt no difference, and that one acknowledged subtle effects can be hard to notice. **Taste, smell, pill size, form:** Nobody mentions taste or smell. One store summary says a reviewer liked the size and quality of the brand, and another says the size and packaging suit people of all ages. The one packaging request is a flip-top cap: "I do hope for flip top cap one day." Delivery is described in a store summary as easy and quick. **Value for money:** Price does not come up in the reviews. One store summary specifically notes that no written review complains about price. Others describe the quality as excellent, and one calls it the best-quality green tea ingredient on the market, which suggests buyers feel they get a good product, though no one weighs cost directly. **Who it seems to suit and who it did not:** It seems to suit people who want green tea benefits without caffeine, who tolerate supplements poorly on the stomach, or who are adding it to a diet, training or existing supplement routine. One reviewer who is a restless sleeper valued the change in sleep and grogginess, and mentions that dosing can be adjusted to preference. It suited less well people expecting a clear, standalone effect, those who felt nothing after a month, and the buyers who had migraines or agitation. Results look personal, and several reviewers framed it as a supporting piece of a routine rather than a fix on its own.

Biohacker Summary

Members Only10 of 10 recommend it
10 of 10 biohackers on our panel recommend it

Most of the panel uses or recommends green tea, and only one of the ten gives a clear warning. People take it for visceral fat loss, fat burning when drunk fasted in the morning, focus and calm energy, gut health, and as a swap for coffee. Most of them talk about drinking it as tea, though one takes a couple of green tea capsules in the morning and another notes an extract that is high in EGCG (a green tea compound). Lemon or other citrus is the most common pairing, said to help the body hold on to more of the tea's catechins (its main active compounds), and one also pairs it with MCT oil, and one panelist adds vitamin C. The one warning says very high doses of EGCG or extract could harm the liver, that green tea contains oxalates tied to kidney stones, and that it may deplete folic acid and may not suit pregnancy; another found it did not extend lifespan in animal studies, and the panel gave only one exact amount, 2 cups a day.

Body systems: Metabolism, Fat tissue, Cardiovascular system, Nervous system

Combine with: For its actual metabolic and antioxidant purpose, green tea phytosome pairs well with berberine or chromium for glucose handling, omega-3 fish oil for cardiometabolic support, and alpha-lipoic acid or resveratrol for additional antioxidant and insulin-sensitivity support. Take it with food to reduce stomach upset. If your true goal is fast post-meal upper-abdominal comfort, look instead at products with digestive enzymes (protease, lipase, amylase), ginger, peppermint oil, artichoke leaf, bitter herbs such as gentian, or betaine HCl if low stomach acid is suspected, and consult a clinician for persistent symptoms.

Possible side effects: The studies report no major side effects. A few buyers reported migraines or agitation even though the product is decaffeinated.
