Thorne Omega Superb Review

Omega Superb from Thorne is a lemon berry flavored liquid fish oil designed for adults and children aged 4 and up. The product is presented as a fruity, lightly sweetened liquid that provides optimal amounts of EPA and DHA, omega-3 fatty acids that the page says promote brain development and heart, skin, and eye health. Each one teaspoon serving supplies 900 mg of EPA and 600 mg of DHA, and the container holds 40 servings. The page describes the omega-3 fatty acids as supporting healthy brain function, cardiovascular health, memory, and mood, and says they are important for both adults and children. Thorne states that the product uses astaxanthin and rosemary extract as natural antioxidant preservatives to stabilize the fish oil. The liquid is lightly sweetened with monk fruit extract and contains 0 g sugar, and the page says it delivers the benefits of traditional omega-3 supplements without a fishy aftertaste. Listed benefits include support for neural development and healthy brain function, support for the health of blood vessels and optimal blood flow, help in maintaining already normal triglyceride and cholesterol levels, support for memory and mood, and healthy inflammatory responses in joints and muscles. Features listed include EPA and DHA in their naturally occurring triglyceride form, a fish oil sourced from anchovy, sardine, and mackerel, and molecular distillation that the page says removes contaminants including PCBs and heavy metals. The page notes the triglyceride form is highly bioavailable and suits liquid formulas where capsule size and number are not an issue. Thorne says the product has been third-party tested to verify that contents match the label and to confirm no unsafe levels of heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms. Warnings state that the product is contraindicated for anyone with a history of hypersensitivity to its ingredients, that the omega-3s are derived from fish, that pregnant users should consult a health-care practitioner, and that no known adverse interactions were reported at publication date.

This liquid gives 1800 milligrams of omega-3 fats a day, above the 1000 milligram dose that worked in studies. The main, reliable effect is lower triglycerides, a type of blood fat, rather than lower bad cholesterol. A review of 86 trials lasting at least a year, with 162,796 adults, found omega-3 lowered triglycerides by about 15 percent, more at higher doses, with little or no effect on other blood fats [1]. An earlier review of 79 trials found the same pattern [2], and fish-based omega-3 also slightly raised good cholesterol [3]. A review of 90 trials found omega-3 lowered triglycerides and cholesterol other than the good kind, most clearly above 2 grams a day, which is a little more than this serving [4]. Some studies point the other way for bad cholesterol. A review of 21 trials found fish oil lowered triglycerides and slightly raised good cholesterol, but also raised bad cholesterol [5]. In a 3-year trial of 2,157 adults aged 70 and older, 1 gram a day lowered triglycerides and raised good cholesterol, but also raised bad and total cholesterol, with no drop in heart events [6]. Expect help mainly with triglycerides. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

Across the stores that sell it, Thorne Omega Superb carries about 583 ratings. Most buyers are happy, mainly with the lemon-berry taste and how easy the liquid is to take, though a few reviewers hated the taste and price comes up as a drawback. **What buyers say it did for them:** Results are mentioned briefly. One reviewer wrote "Good taste and great results." A parent said their son's trainer suggested omegas for his weight lifting and "They have really helped his joint pain." One reviewer on the LT Shop page said they love the effect, and another there is still hoping it proves effective. Vitacost reviewers call it good quality fish oil that works well, and several say they would buy it again. Some reviewers appreciate that it has "a higher level of Omega than others" they looked at. **What they complain about:** Taste is the sharpest split. One buyer reported a "Terrible dead fish taste" and said the first bottle was great but the second was not. Another asked, "Do people really think it tastes good?" and suspected a bad batch, saying there is no lemon berry flavor. A Vitacost reviewer with gallbladder issues got a fishy taste but said any omega-3 does that to them. Another noted that the brand adds flavours. Several shoppers were stuck waiting on orders or a wait list, and one LT Shop buyer had items missing from orders twice and needed three calls and two emails to sort it out. Those are service problems, not product problems. **Taste, smell and form:** Most reviewers like the taste. Store summaries describe it as pleasant, non-fishy and lacking aftertaste, and one buyer says it doesn't cause hours of burping. A reviewer who has never managed omega-3s because of the fishy burp found this one tasted good with no fishy burp. A buyer who struggles with the size of most omega supplements found the liquid "awesome." One reviewer likes that it is "one of the few omegas without gelatin." **Value for money:** Price is the recurring drawback. One reviewer called it "Just expensive," and another wished for "a larger bottle to compare better to Carlsens," so cost per bottle size is a concern. Beyond that, the reviews don't say much about value. **Who it suits and who it did not:** It seems to suit people who dislike fishy omega-3s or can't swallow large capsules, and families with children. One reviewer said their boys, ages 4 and 5, ask for the "yummy stuff," and another with four children said they happily take it. It also suits people who want a gelatin-free product with a high omega level. It suited less well those who got a bad-tasting bottle, those who prefer an unflavoured oil, and buyers sensitive to fishy tastes in general. Reviews of other forms of this product were left out; this summary covers the liquid only.

Biohacker Summary

Members Only7 of 10 recommend it
7 of 10 biohackers on our panel recommend it

Most of the panel recommends omega-3 fatty acids, with six of ten leaning toward recommending them and the rest staying neutral, and none of them reporting that they stopped. People take them for inflammation, heart health and triglycerides, brain function, healthy aging, skin, and fertility. Several prefer EPA and DHA, the two main omega-3 types, from fish oil or oily fish such as salmon and sardines, and one says to take them with a meal that contains fat for better absorption. Doses range from 1 gram a day up to 2 to 4 grams a day, and one says it takes about 2 grams a day to raise a low omega-3 level, while another warns that many people underdose because standard capsules hold little EPA and DHA. One panelist cautions that the research on omega-3s is not strong for preventing hard heart disease outcomes, and another points out that plant-based omega-3s may matter less than fish sources when seed oils are in the diet.

Members OnlyTier 2 for Cholesterol

Large reviews of human trials consistently show omega-3 lowers triglycerides and slightly raises good cholesterol at doses this product meets [1][3], and 84% of 761 reviews are positive, which meets tier 2.

Body systems: Cardiovascular system, Blood

Combine with: Thorne Omega Superb provides EPA and DHA, which reliably lower triglycerides and support overall cardiovascular health. Their effect on LDL cholesterol is modest, and DHA can raise LDL slightly in some people. For a broader lipid-support stack, consider pairing it with soluble fiber such as psyllium or beta-glucan to reduce LDL absorption, plant sterols and stanols (about 2 g daily) to block dietary cholesterol uptake, and bergamot extract or red yeast rice (monitor with a clinician, since it contains monacolin K, a med-like compound). Niacin (taken under medical supervision) can help raise HDL and lower triglycerides. Coenzyme Q10 or ubiquinol supports heart muscle energy and is especially useful for anyone on meds. Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) or astaxanthin can help protect omega-3 fats from oxidation, and magnesium supports healthy blood pressure and vascular function. Take omega-3s with a fat-containing meal for better absorption. Consult a healthcare provider before combining with meds or lipid-lowering medications.

Possible side effects: Bad cholesterol rose in some studies. A few reviewers reported a fishy taste, especially one with gallbladder issues.
