Study, Trial or Testing Result Summary
Members Only48 human studies · 28 improved
1 of these 48 human studies gave fish oil by drip, not by mouth.
This product gives 2400 milligrams of fish oil a day, which is above the 2 grams used in studies. The research on fish oil for muscle is mixed. In a placebo-controlled trial of 200 older adults, 4 grams daily for 6 months increased muscle mass, grip strength and walking test performance compared with corn oil [1]. A pooled analysis of up to 66 trials found modest gains in lean mass, muscle mass and leg strength, though the studies were small and varied [2]. Other pooled analyses found no effect on lean body mass. These include 11 placebo-controlled trials [3], 26 trials in people with cancer [4], and an analysis of fish or fish oil trials that found slight fat loss but no change in lean mass [5]. In 107 older adults at risk of muscle loss, 24 weeks of protein plus fish oil did not improve lean mass, strength or performance [6]. Any benefit looks small and inconsistent. Where it appears, it is mostly in older adults and at higher doses than this product gives. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

RAL Summary
Members OnlyTier 4 for Muscle and Strength
The studies on fish oil for muscle disagree, with a controlled trial and one pooled analysis showing gains and other pooled analyses showing none, so the evidence is mixed rather than showing it does not work. So it is graded Tier 4, as the studies disagree.
- Emerging: not enough evidence to rank higher yet.
Where the evidence disagrees: 13 of the 48 human studies found no effect.
