Black Forest THE PROTOCOL™ Review

THE PROTOCOL™ is a morning supplement stack from Black Forest Supplements. The brand's stacks page describes it as an "Editor's Pick" aimed at men who feel their vitality slipping. It combines three systems and three compounds into one morning routine. The compounds are NMN for cellular energy, cocoa flavanols for blood flow, and Turkesterone with Tongkat Ali for testosterone. The brand says it is meant to reclaim the three systems men lose after 30. Black Forest sells the components individually. I couldn't confirm the exact bundle doses on the page I read, so the doses below come from the individual products. NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a precursor to NAD⁺. NAD⁺ is a coenzyme that mitochondria use in energy metabolism, and it is also used by repair enzymes such as sirtuins and PARPs. NAD⁺ levels fall with age, so supplementing a precursor is meant to restore the cell's supply. Black Forest's NMN is sold at 1000mg per serving. It is described as 99% pure and stabilized, and it is paired with BioPerine®, a black pepper extract that is meant to improve absorption. The cocoa flavanol product is Supercharged Cocoa Flavanols + Flavonoids 1200mg. An independent review says it supplies 600mg of standardized epicatechin plus 600mg of flavonoids per serving. Flavanols are thought to support endothelial nitric oxide production, which helps blood vessels relax and supports normal blood flow. The same review notes that the EFSA-authorized claim covers only normal blood flow at about 200mg of flavanols a day. It also notes that the large COSMOS trial was inconclusive on hard cardiovascular events. Turkesterone is an ecdysteroid from Ajuga turkestanica. The brand sells it at 500mg per capsule and describes it as 95% pure. Marketing says it supports muscle building and performance. Its proposed mechanism is signaling through estrogen receptor beta and anabolic pathways, rather than through the androgen receptor. Human evidence for this is limited. Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a traditional Southeast Asian root extract. It is studied for its possible effect on free testosterone, partly by reducing SHBG binding and supporting the hormone axis. The brand says its products are third-party tested, made in the USA in an FDA-registered, GMP-certified facility, and free of GMOs and gluten. It also advertises free shipping and a 60-day guarantee. As with any dietary supplement, the FDA has not evaluated these claims. People who are on blood pressure or hormone-related medication should talk to a clinician before taking it.

Zinc is the only ingredient here at a dose that worked in a study. In 50 overweight people with fatty liver on a diet, 30 mg daily for 8 weeks lowered weight and waist size more than placebo [1]. In 98 men and women with pre-diabetes, the same dose for up to a year did not change weight or waist [2]. Artichoke leaf reaches a studied dose at two servings a day. Pooled trials found it modestly lowered body mass index and waist size but not body weight [3][4]. Turmeric is well below the studied dose, though curcumin lowered weight across many trials [5]. Milk thistle did not change body mass index in pooled trials [6][7]. Beetroot did not change weight or body fat in pooled trials [8]. Choline is at a very small dose, and a higher dose did not change weight loss [9]. Burdock, chanca piedra and dandelion have only animal or uncontrolled evidence [10][11][12]. The contents of the 416 mg proprietary blend are not given. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

Customer feedback on Black Forest comes mostly from reviews of its cocoa flavanol powder. Those reviews are overwhelmingly positive about taste. Buyers call it delicious and a "cozy" evening treat. Many mix it into coffee or coconut milk, and one reviewer on Walmart called it a morning "rocket fuel." Older and male buyers often describe feeling better. Examples include steadier blood pressure, more energy, and being able to keep up with gym sessions and play with grandchildren. One reviewer called the products a game changer for men over 40. Some customers also say the cocoa is better than other brands they've tried. Published feedback on the NMN, Turkesterone, and Tongkat Ali products is thinner, but they are marketed on purity, third-party testing, and BioPerine for absorption. Bloggers who tried the NMN liked that it is shelf-stable and needs no refrigeration. The criticism is milder and falls into a few groups. One customer asked why the cocoa comes in black plastic and whether the container is safe. Some low star ratings, such as a 2-out-of-5 on Walmart, show that not everyone notices a benefit. Skeptical analysts say the brand's heart and performance claims go beyond what the evidence supports. For example, they point out that the COSMOS cocoa trial was inconclusive on cardiovascular events. They also say the testosterone and muscle claims for Turkesterone and Tongkat Ali rest on limited human data. Some third-party sites raise concerns about the company itself. One critical review cites complaints about its reliability. A scam-detector site gives the website a low trust score, while ScamAdviser rates it as probably legit. Taken together, buyers like the flavor and the way they feel, while skeptics question the evidence and the company's trustworthiness.

Biohacker Summary

0 of 10 biohackers on our panel recommend it

Zinc is the main ingredient, and all ten panelists spoke about it, with most recommending or using it. They take it for immune support, testosterone and male fertility, gut lining (in the form of zinc carnosine), wound healing, mood, and skin care. Doses ranged from 15 mg a day for longevity, to 30 mg for sperm health, to 40 to 60 mg a day for fighting viruses, and one panelist uses 30 grams a day around surgery as part of his own formulation. They pair it with vitamin C, magnesium, and zinc rich foods like pumpkin seeds and oysters, and one panelist noted it raises testosterone only when zinc or testosterone levels are low. Turmeric is a smaller ingredient in this product, and one panelist warns that it should be stopped before surgery.

RAL Summary

Members OnlyTier 4 for Weight and Metabolism for Men

The review summary describes Black Forest's cocoa flavanol powder, NMN, Turkesterone and Tongkat Ali products and the company in general, not THE PROTOCOL liver and weight formula, so it should be set aside. Its reviews are set aside, so it is graded on its studies alone. Human studies support Zinc (3 of 10 human studies showed an improvement), but there are not yet enough reviews to confirm it (0).

Take 2 servings a day (4 capsules) to match the dose that worked in the studies.

  • Emerging: not enough evidence to rank higher yet.

Where the evidence disagrees: 33 of the 117 human studies found no effect.

Body systems: Metabolic system, Digestive system, Liver

Combine with: If the goal is gallbladder support and fat digestion, pair it with proven ingredients: ox bile or purified bile salts with meals to emulsify fats, taurine and phosphatidylcholine or lecithin to support bile fluidity, and a broad-spectrum digestive enzyme with lipase. Choleretic herbs such as artichoke leaf extract, dandelion root, and milk thistle support bile flow and liver function. Magnesium can ease sluggish bowel transit that often accompanies poor fat digestion. Eat smaller, moderate-fat meals, and see a clinician first if you have gallstones, a bile duct obstruction, or persistent right upper abdominal pain, because bile stimulants can be harmful in those cases.

Possible side effects: No major side effects reported.
