Thorne B-Complex #12 Review

Thorne B-Complex #12 is a capsule supplement that provides a balance of essential B vitamins plus choline, with extra vitamin B12. The page states that it delivers all eight B vitamins, with additional B12 in its active, methylated form, to support energy production, red blood cell formation, and a healthy nervous system. Each serving is one capsule, and the container holds 60 capsules, priced at $26, or $23.40 with a subscription that saves 10 percent. The formula lists Biotin 80mcg, Choline Citrate 14mg, Vitamin B1 as Thiamin HCI 40mg, Vitamin B12 as Methylcobalamin 600mcg, Vitamin B5 as Pantothenic Acid 45mg, Vitamin B3 as Niacinamide 80mg, Vitamin B6 as Pyridoxal 5'-Phosphate 3.4mg, Vitamin B6 as Pyridoxine HCL 20mg, Vitamin B2 as Riboflavin 25mg, Vitamin B2 as Riboflavin 5'-Phosphate Sodium 3.6mg, and Folate as L-5-MTHF 667mcg DFE. Thorne describes the product as containing the active, tissue-ready forms of several B vitamins, which it presents as important for people who may not convert non-active B vitamins efficiently because of liver function, enzyme function, digestive disorders, or increasing age. The listed benefits include support for healthy nerve cells and a well-functioning nervous system, normal red blood cell formation, tissue and cellular repair, normal methylation and homocysteine metabolism through methylated B12 and folate, DNA synthesis, and cellular energy production. The page says the methylated forms of B12 and folate may benefit individuals with specific gene variants, and it names people with an MTHFR gene variant, people seeking nervous system support, people taking certain medications that deplete B vitamins, aging individuals, and those who do not consume enough B12 and folate in the diet as groups who may benefit. The ingredients are stated to be not derived from yeast. Other ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, calcium laurate, and a hypromellose capsule derived from cellulose. The warnings section says the product is contraindicated in anyone with a history of hypersensitivity to its ingredients, and that pregnant people should consult a health-care practitioner before use. It also notes that 5-methyltetrahydrofolate is not recommended alongside a med cancer therapy, although folate may be taken safely by people using a med for psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis. Thorne states that the product has been third-party tested and certified to confirm that its contents match the label and contain no unsafe levels of contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms.

For the B vitamins that make up this product, the evidence for energy is mixed. Thiamine at 10 mg a day lowered fatigue in older women who were mildly low in it [1], and high doses eased fatigue in people with bowel disease [2], but the same high dose did not help people with a liver disease [3]. Riboflavin-fortified juice lowered fatigue in construction workers [4], but a nutrient mix with riboflavin did not help dialysis patients [5]. Vitamin B6 at 50 mg improved tiredness in women with premenstrual symptoms [6], yet larger trials of blends with B6 found no benefit [7]. A review of 27 studies found niacin-related compounds did not improve tiredness [8]. Vitamin B12 mostly did not help people who were not deficient [9], and injections did no better than placebo in chronic fatigue syndrome [10]. Folate reduced fatigue in advanced kidney disease [11] but not in women with anemia after childbirth [12]. Pantothenic acid did not improve exercise performance [13]. Choline here is far below studied doses, and plain choline did not delay exercise fatigue [14]. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

Shoppers rate Thorne B-Complex #12 highly, with about 5,244 ratings across the stores that sell it. Most of the written feedback is positive. The complaints concern price and one bad delivery, not the capsules. **What buyers say it did for them:** Energy is the most common benefit. One buyer says it "gives energy, stops mood swings, makes you feel happy," and another reports "More energy and mental clarity!" A long-term user says it "seems to give me energy." One buyer who was prescribed a B complex during a serious illness says it "seems to be working well." The Thorne page's summary also mentions a noticeable difference in mood and energy and less fatigue. One reviewer on the Vitacost page, however, saw no change in their blood tests and switched to another complex. **What buyers complain about:** Cost and delivery are the main complaints. One reviewer says it "makes a difference but the prices are very high" and that they can't afford to buy it again. Another gave one star because of a late Walmart order with no tracking, calling it "a great product" but "lousy customer service." That complaint is about the seller, not the supplement. One buyer who had only just started it said they couldn't yet judge long-term effects. **Taste, smell, pill size and form:** The reviews say little about this. The Vitacost page says the capsules are easy to swallow and medium in size. One reviewer there calls the taste average but not unpleasant. The Thorne page notes that no reviewers mention capsule size, taste or stomach problems. Reviews of other forms of the product were left out, and this summary covers the capsules only. **Value for money:** Opinions are mixed. One buyer finds the price too high to keep buying. Another likes that a subscription is offered, which "makes it an easy choice." The Vitacost page describes the amount in the bottle as reasonable and the packaging as practical. **Who it seems to suit and who it did not:** Buyers who care about ingredient quality and brand trust are the most satisfied. One says "This is the most pure product I've found." Another calls it a "clean brand" and says "I trust this brand." A Vitacost reviewer praises the lack of unnecessary fillers and the well-balanced formula, which includes folic acid. It also suits people taking it alongside other medications, as one reviewer says it is "just what my wife needs" for that purpose. One Vitacost reviewer suggests taking B vitamins early in the day. It suited less well anyone on a tight budget, anyone who saw no change in blood tests, and anyone ordering through a marketplace seller with poor tracking. That buyer advises getting it from Amazon instead.

Biohacker Summary

Members Only9 of 10 recommend it
9 of 10 biohackers on our panel recommend it

Choline is the main ingredient, and nine of the ten panelists spoke about it, with about half recommending or using it and the rest staying neutral. They mostly want it for the brain, including focus, acetylcholine, cell membranes and liver function, and one panelist also links it to clearing toxins and to a baby's brain development in pregnancy. Most favor food sources such as eggs, with one eating two to four a day and another suggesting four a day in pregnancy, while others take supplements, including a plant-based form, a phosphatidylcholine form, and nootropics that contain choline. Doses were rare, though one panelist cited 900 mg a day in pregnancy, and one pairs choline with racetams, especially over age 35, to avoid headaches and muscle tension. Cautions were that choline can convert into a compound worth measuring if you supplement, and that the contents of supplements are hard to verify; B12 and folate were smaller ingredients in this product, and several panelists recommend them, while one warns that biotin can distort lab tests.

RAL Summary

Members OnlyTier 4 for Energy

The tier rests on an uncontrolled study of citicoline, a different compound from the 14 mg of choline citrate in this product, while the main B vitamins show mixed or no benefit for energy. So it is graded Tier 4, lower than the rules alone gave.

  • Emerging: not enough evidence to rank higher yet.

Where the evidence disagrees: 48 of the 96 human studies found no effect.

Body systems: Nervous system, Metabolic system, Muscular system

Combine with: For long-term regularity, pair a B-complex with ingredients that act on the bowel: soluble fiber such as psyllium husk, partially hydrolyzed guar gum or acacia fiber (taken with plenty of water), magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide for gentle osmotic action, and a clinically studied probiotic such as Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12 or B. lactis HN019. Ground flaxseed, prunes or kiwifruit extract can add gentle support, and adequate hydration and daily movement matter. The B-complex can still be taken separately for energy and methylation support. If constipation is persistent, worsening, or accompanied by pain, bleeding or weight loss, consult a healthcare professional.

Possible side effects: High-dose niacin forms can cause flushing, stomach upset, fatigue and liver problems, more often at higher doses. Buyers mention no stomach problems.
