Collagen peptides, at 13 grams a day in this product, are the main ingredient. A review pooling 19 trials in 768 healthy adults who trained for at least 8 weeks found small gains in fat-free mass, muscle structure and maximal strength compared with controls, with low to moderate certainty [1]. In 12-week training trials, 15 grams daily added more fat-free mass than placebo in middle-aged men [2], premenopausal women [3] and older men with muscle loss, who also gained leg strength [4]. In trained men, 10 grams daily added slightly more muscle than placebo over 8 weeks [5]. However, a one-year trial in 208 older adults who did not train found no change in muscle size or strength [6]. MitoHeal, a peat and apple extract blend, is at a full dose. Two small trials in 25 trained men found more muscle growth [7] and bigger squat, deadlift and jump gains than placebo [8]. Nicotinamide riboside showed no benefit for muscle mass or function in a pooled analysis of older adults [9]. Betaine is present only in a trace amount, far below the 2.5 grams studied [10], and its evidence is mixed [11]. HydroPeach has no human studies. Animal and cell studies are never counted.

Biohacker Summary

Members Only0 of 10 recommend it
0 of 10 biohackers on our panel recommend it

Most of the panel backs collagen: four of the ten recommend it and four more say they use it, while two are neutral and one has stopped taking it. People take it mainly for joints, tendons and ligaments, skin elasticity, and muscle, and a few mention gut, sleep, or recovery. Doses cluster around 10 grams a day, taken in the morning by three of them, while one suggests 15 grams and two suggest 2.5 to 5 grams of hydrolyzed peptides for at least 8 weeks for skin; two advise taking it an hour before exercise, one of them with vitamin C. Cautions come from two panelists: one says it is an incomplete protein that should be paired with another protein and is poor as a sole protein for muscle, and another says it will not repair a damaged gut wall. Nicotinamide riboside is a smaller ingredient in this product, and the panel's views on it are mixed, with one using it and others skeptical or noting limited evidence.

States that as a scientist, he hasn't seen evidence that collagen leads to greater connective tissue protein synthesis rates in muscle, but if he were recovering from a hip or knee injury, he would take a protein supplement with some collagen to ensure enough glycine and proline for ligaments, tendons, bone, and cartilage.

States that NR did not extend mouse lifespan in their tests. However, he is not a 'non-believer' for NR and the whole nicotinamide modulating family, believing the book is still open and there's a reasonable chance for good results, possibly in combination with another drug or a different form.

Reports that NR by itself did not extend mouse lifespan, but he remains open to the possibility that it could work in combination with another drug or in a different form to modulate NAD availability.
    • 11 Dec 2022 · Nicotinamide Riboside · warns · Facebook ↗
Discusses Nicotinamide riboside (NR) as an expensive, over-the-counter supplement that some believe might increase lifespan, but for which there is virtually no evidence indicating efficacy, and suggests there might be risks beyond wasting money.

Believes that for general use for longevity, the small, possible benefits of Nicotinamide riboside (NR) do not outweigh the small, possible risks.

Discusses nicotinamide riboside (NR) as an NAD precursor that has been shown in some studies to lead to benefits associated with healthy aging and lifespan extension in mice, though these results are not always reproducible.

Recommends collagen supplements, in either pill or powder form, for hair, skin, nails, bones, and for putting on and maintaining healthy muscle, as it's difficult to get enough from diet alone.

RAL Summary

Members OnlyTier 4 for Muscle and Strength

Collagen peptides at a full dose have some human trial support for muscle building, including a pooled review showing small gains with training [1]. However, there are no counted reviews, so the product stays at emerging.

  • Emerging: not enough evidence to rank higher yet.

Where the evidence disagrees: 20 of the 49 human studies found no effect.
